Our facial expressions change because the muscles in the face contract or relax.

This is caused by the brain sending a signal via our nerve endings that we want to, for example, frown or laugh. When botulinum toxin is injected into a specific muscle it blocks the signal from the nerve to the muscles in the face. This means that the nerve ending cannot tell the muscle to move. This is not a permanent condition, however, but it will last for around 3 – 4 months.

BoNT-A for Chronic Migraines

Botulinum toxin A to prevent migraines – guidance published in May 2012 by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). NICE recommends that BoNT-A can be considered as an option for the prevention of headaches for people who have chronic migraine (headaches on at least 15 days of every month, at least eight days of which are migraine) that has not responded to at least three prior preventative drug treatments.

The reasons why Botox might aid migraine are not clear, and several theories have been put forward. At various points it has been suggested that:

• Botox might relax muscles around the head and thereby reduce blood pressure within the brain
• Botox might reduce the nerves’ ability to send pain signals during a migraine
• Botox might prevent the nerves from sending signals that will lead to a migraine

One treatment lasts for 10-12 weeks, and patients reported that two Botox treatments reduced the number of headache days by approximately 50%.
